Finale Cake

Woohoo! I'm done with course 3! (one more course to go and then I"m done!) I decided to get totally wild and do this:

Can I just say that I love it? It was SO fun and way better than the stuffy wedding cake they wanted us to do. I love my teacher. She lets us do what we want!

Confession...I didn't do the dots all the way around. I got tired and lazy. I COMPLETELY understand why people charge so much for these custom cakes. It took a LOT of time and work! But I love doing it. Love it! The bottom cake is a applesauce spice cake with caramel frosting filling. Pretty much to die for. The top is a chocolate wacky cake with sourcream frosting and vanilla buttercream filling. Oh and marshmallow fondant of course! It tastes delicious!

(can you tell I'm tired in this picture?)

Mistakes: I didn't ice my top layer very smoothly and you can definitely tell! Also the fondant is a little thin in some places. The top layer is tilted a little bit...

P.S. I have a ton more of these roses. Should I have used more? Less? What do you think the cake needs?

P.P.S. I know I should probably wait until morning to take pictures of my cakes but I can't wait that long. But the lighting would be better. Oh well.

Tuesday is my last class for Course 3. The wilton books says we are supposed to do something like this:

But the pillars are so outdated to me and I want to stack my two layers. But what should I do? Something like this:

this:

or this:

I am leaving my roses as white because I am lazy and I don't want to tint my fondant. But I might tint the marshmallow fondant a different color. Any thoughts? I'll only have two layers...

Cake Class and a headband

Cake class was all about royal icing flowers tonight. I didn't really excel in these flowers, so ya...need to practice. But they are really fun and hopefully someday someone wants me to do a pretty and elegant flowery cake.

Petunia

Easter lily

Morning Glory

And today I whipped up this headband. Super cute eh? Not my little wispy curly angel hairs on my face though. I could do without those...

p.s. if anyone is interested in one of these and you don't want to make it yourself (i can send you instructions or you can come over sometime) I'd be happy to make one for you! I'm thinking $5 for a headband and $7 for a belt.

Wilton Course 3, Class 2

Tonight we worked with fondant for the first time. We learned how to cover a cake with marshmallow fondant and also make a fondant rose. I really liked the fondant roses. They were a little tedious and took a long time, but they turned out WAY better than those darn buttercream roses that gave me such a hard time.

I like the way my cake turned out. If I would have known better I would have made one more loop to go in the center and made the loops a little thinner in width. Oh well. My fondant did start to bubble a little when I got home and I'm not sure why. I'm excited to eat it, but I don't have the heart to cut into it until Nathan sees it. :) It is a from-scratch yellow cake with a chocolate sour cream icing. YUM! If they are good I'll post the recipes.
